Crown Molding, Is It Right For Your Space?
Crown molding is a great architectural feature that really can add value to the home. It adds a visual presence and can make the home feel very upscale. If done well, it can say “this home is well-crafted and solid”. Older homes are usually known for more character and crown molding---so if you are in a newer home, you may feel your home is lacking architectural detail.
But, can crown molding work in your home? Are your ceilings to low to use it? Maybe you can’t afford it, or at least that wide molding you love. Or maybe style and size is a bit overwhelming. Whatever the case may be, here are a few tips to help answer some of those questions!
Consider the home style and ceiling height.
Large crown molding works with a large scale room and high ceilings. If you have a contemporary home or mid-century modern California ranch-style home, any sort of crown molding may look completely out of place.
If ornate crown molding is your thing, and you have a traditional home but like the more contemporary style, then keep your furnishings simple. Clean lines and little pattern. This will allow the architecture to stand out while still giving you a space that feels very serene. Professional Remodel Company in Gilbert AZ
High Ceiling Tip: If you have ceilings 10 feet or higher, allow 1’’ of width for each foot of ceiling height. This isn’t a “hard rule”, and doesn’t work for low ceilings.
High ceiling tip: For ceilings 10 feet tall or higher, consider a rule of thumb allowing 1" of width for each foot of ceiling height. This isn't a hard and fast rule, and it doesn't work for lower ceilings. You wouldn't use an 8" wide molding in a room with 8' tall ceilings, for example. Professional Remodel Company in Gilbert AZ
